Red squirrelTree Conservation – Monkey Puzzle

Have you noticed that the monkey puzzle tree forms the heart of the Explorers Logo? The Royal Edinburgh Botanic Gardens donated 40 monkey puzzle plants which where collected wild as seed from Chile.

We planted this precious seed onto the bank which looks out beyond the theatre onto the hills of Ben-y-Vrackie. This is the best position for these trees and as part of a conservation project we will in turn distribute their seed upon maturity. We are active participants in the Conifer Conservation initiative.

Tree Survey

An initial tree survey was completed upon the site of the Explorers Garden. Diseased trees were removed.

Plant Conservation – primulia muscariodes – a true species

We are currently working to conserve and develop the primulia muscariodes and primulia whitei Hybrid from the Himalayas. Again, we will collect new seeds from these plants to grow more plants and help preserve these wonderful species.

This activity is rare in cultivation in global terms. Inspired by the Plant Hunters before us, we aim to pioneer conservation. To that end, we will send the seed to both private collections and botanic gardens to ensure this species is preserved.

ptarmiganChemicals

Few chemicals are used in the garden and weeding is mostly done by hand. (volunteers) 25 bird boxes have been put back into the garden to encourage the birds to multiply.

Wildlife

We feed the birds and red squirrels throughout the year using feedboxes. The creatures of the Garden are as intrinsic and important as the flowers and the art.

Plant Hunters

Hunters History

The Plant Hunters were not just botanists, they were adventurers and explorers. They had to be tough to survive the conditions they faced in far-flung corners of the world. They survived shipwrecks, sieges and slavery and battled with pirates, escaped convicts and hostile natives.
