Pinero's Trelawny Of The ‘Wells' Opens This Week

Fourth to open in our Summer Season is Trelawny Of The ‘Wells' by Arthur Wing Pinero. If you enjoyed Pinero's last PFT production The Magistrate in 2008, then this is the play for you!

With a cast of 16, lavish sets and gorgeous costumes, this will be another of PFT's renowned period comedy productions. An epic, romantic comedy, Trelawny Of The ‘Wells' is an affectionate and hilarious portrait of the theatrical world of Pinero's youth in the 1860s and echoes Pitlochry Festival Theatre's own look back at its past.
Rose Trelawny, the effervescent rising star of Sadler's Wells, faces an agonizing decision: should she give up the carefree world of the theatre in order to please the Establishment family of Arthur Gower, with whom she has fallen hopelessly in love? Or should she forsake her beloved to pursue the glittering theatrical career that beckons?

Heart rules head. With theatreland in mourning, Rose prepares for a respectable new life in Cavendish Square - as before the wedding, she is to spend a period ‘on probation' at the Gowers' home, under the watchful eyes of Arthur's grandfather, the choleric Sir William Gower Q.C., and his prim great-aunt, Miss Trafalgar.
But the stifling, regimented routine at Cavendish Square requires Rose to play a part to which she is ill-suited. And every new rule and regulation makes her urge to rebel grow stronger. Until a surprise nocturnal visit from some of Rose's old theatrical chums brings matters to an explosive head . . !

Pinero's affectionate, hilarious memoir of the theatrical world of his youth in the 1860s - when melodrama was giving way to a new kind of theatre - is the only major work by this great comic playwright never before staged at PFT. What better choice could there be for PFT's 60th Anniversary celebration?

Trewlany Of The ‘Wells' opens (previews) at Pitlochry Festival Theatre on 2nd June and will play in repertoire until 15th October. Tickets are available from box office: 01796 484626 or online.

From 1951 to the 21st Century...

Discover our history "When staying in Pitlochry during the early part of the war, I chanced to see a stately house with a fairly large garden, quite close to the town. I at once realised that here my dream theatre might well be established in this fashionable resort right in the heart of Scotland"… John Stewart, Founder of Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
