Swinging Winter Warmers for Pitlochry

Andy Mears & his Jazz Orchestra are collaborating with sultry songstress Lorna Reid for a series of 4 concerts in Scotland to celebrate Christmas in exemplary Big Band fashion.

Appearing at Pitlochry Festival Theatre on Saturday 12th December 09 (show starts 7.30pm), this dynamic and exciting 16 piece orchestra, featuring a host of first class, UK, and predominantly Scottish bred talent, promises to delight with a programme of Big Band classics and skilfully arranged Christmas favourites.

Effortlessly swinging and unified in its desire to do so, AMJO, which draws from the libraries of Bands both past and present as well as performing some original material too, respectfully pays tribute to the great bands of the past (Basie, Ellington, Rich, Mingus, Sinatra & more) whilst also offering a platform for composers and arrangers of today.

Since its formation in September 2007 Andy has been encouraged by the Band’s ethos of hard work and attention to detail as well as the extremely positive way in which it has been received at its many public engagements to date. Andy says, “I am certain that given the level of commitment shown and the broad array of talent on offer, an exciting and prosperous future awaits”.

The Ensemble features established Scottish talent as well as promising young musicians bustling with desire and energy: an exhilarating blend of youthful zeal and experience that has quickly seen The Andy Mears Jazz Orchestra establish itself as one of the most exciting musical projects happening in Scotland today.

Andy’s own playing career has seen him perform extensively both in the UK and abroad. Artists, Bands & Shows he has worked with include: - Buddy Greco, NYJO, The New Squadronaires, The Memphis Belle Swing Orchestra, The Glen Miller Tribute Orchestra, The Rat Pack, Katherine Jenkins, Jane McDonald, Jimmy James & the Vagabonds and many more as well as small groups under his own name and with others. However, it was during a recording session with HM Royal Marines Band, Scotland at the Festival Theatre, Pitlochry in Apr 2008 when he was first drawn to the Theatre’s character and suitability as a platform for a performance with his Jazz Orchestra. He is therefore extremely pleased that he is able to bring the ensemble to Pitlochry for the first time and looks forward to it immensely. Tonight’s line up will include:- Andy Mears, Brian Molley, John Ramsbottom, Allon Beauvoisin (Saxes), Phil O Malley, Kevin Garrity, Adrian Drover (Tbns); Gavin Spowart, Lorne Cowieson, Tom McNivven, Billy Hunter (Tpts); Andy Sharkey (Bass), Euan Stevenson (Pno), Marcus Ford (Gtr) & Ken Matthieson (drums). Lorna Reid (Vocals).

From 1951 to the 21st Century...

Discover our history "When staying in Pitlochry during the early part of the war, I chanced to see a stately house with a fairly large garden, quite close to the town. I at once realised that here my dream theatre might well be established in this fashionable resort right in the heart of Scotland"… John Stewart, Founder of Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
