Our Explorers Garden is the star of the latest episode of the Scotland Grows Show podcast, which celebrates the best of Scottish gardening.
In the episode, Caroline Bavey takes listeners through the gates of our seven-acre garden, a place that, in her words, feels like “another world once you come through.” Its design is a journey across continents, from South America to the Himalayas and Japan, following the daring Scottish plant hunters who shaped the way we garden today.
Along the way, Caroline shares:
- the secrets hidden in the garden’s glades, from rare Himalayan poppies to seedlings with connections to Hiroshima
- the joys and challenges of growing such an extraordinary collection in the Scottish climate
- practical tips for woodland and shady gardens
- how conservation, sustainability and creativity shape every project, from leaf mould composting to repurposed garden features
Caroline’s book, From Heather to Himalayas: Walking in the Footsteps of Scotland’s Plant Hunters, is available from Pitlochry Festival Theatre. It’s a great companion to the episode, and to a wander through the garden itself.
