What is Scottish Casting Network?
Scottish Casting Network is a commitment from 6 theatre buildings in Scotland to hold one open casting workshop every two years. This means there will be three open casting workshops held in Scotland every year in perpetuity.
Who will hold the workshops?
The theatres involved are Tron Theatre, Traverse Theatre, Dundee Rep, Citizens Theatre, The Lyceum & Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
The next workshop will be held by Pitlochry Festival Theatre on Wednesday 7 October AND Thursday 8 October.
Applications for the workshops are open and can be found here: https://forms.gle/WnzqNjE2kNgmewcPA
How will each session run?
The first thing to say is that a SCN workshop is not an audition, it is a workshop. It is a chance for actors to play together and those in casting to see how they play. Directors and casting directors will be invited to the workshops as casting participants. There will be two, two and a half hour workshops on each day, comprising 20 actors in each session.
Actors will only be required to attend one workshop.
An example of what the workshops look like is below:
- Introductions (15 mins)
- Facilitator, Casting Participants and Actor Participants
- Group warm up and movement exercise (20 mins)
- Physical and vocal warm up. Visualisation exercise.
- 8 x 3-4 min Duologues with self-reflexive redirection (110 mins)
- Actor participants will receive the duologue in advance allowing them to prepare their text.
- Each duologue will then be reworked
- Goodbyes (5 mins)
- The workshop ends and actors have the opportunity is to network together in the bar/cafe area
- Goodbyes (5 mins)
Actors will be offered a complimentary ticket to watch either Happy Days or I’ll Be Seeing You after their workshop. Those allocated a place in the morning workshop will be offered a ticket to watch the 2.30pm performance of Happy Days and those allocated a place in the afternoon workshop will be offered a ticket to watch the 7.30pm performance of I’ll Be Seeing You.
Who is eligible to apply?
SCN’s priority is professional actors living in Scotland. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Have a base in Scotland
- Have a Spotlight profile.
- Have professional acting training or demonstrate sufficient professional credits.
- Have not attended a Scottish Casting Network workshop in the past two years
How will actors be chosen?
We aim to choose workshop participants with a focus on equity and diversity. As such, the 20 spaces per session will be split as follows: 8 spaces for all applicants
- 2 spaces for participants who identify as Global Majority
- 2 spaces for participants who identify as living with a disability
- 2 spaces for participants who identity as working class
- 2 spaces for participants who identify as LGBTQIA+
How participants identify will have no bearing on the day and will be in no way identified. It is simply an attempt to ensure equity and diversity.
