David Nicholls in conversation with Nicola Sturgeon on fiction and adaptation
David Nicholls talks with Nicola Sturgeon about fiction and adaptation, exploring what changes when a story moves from page to screen.
Drawing on his novels, including One Day and Us, and his work adapting books for television, Nicholls will discuss the creative choices involved in bringing characters and stories to life across different forms.
David Nicholls is the author of six novels. His third, One Day was published in 2009 and became a global bestseller and his fourth novel, Us, was long listed for the Booker Prize for Fiction. On screen, David has written adaptations of Tess, Far from the Madding Crowd and The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4 as well as of his own novels, Starter for Ten, One Day and Us. His adaptation of Edward St Aubyn’s Patrick Melrose was nominated for an Emmy and won him a BAFTA for best writer and best serial. Forthcoming projects include the TV version of his latest novel, You Are Here, starring Claire Foy and Matthew Macfadyen.
