Hawthorn: A Scottish Ghost Story

Elaine Thomson

15 Feb 2026

Join Elaine Thomson in conversation with fellow novelist Olga Wojtas for an entertaining discussion about Elaine’s new book Hawthorn: A Scottish Ghost Story, the first in a quartet of supernatural stories set in the wilds of Scotland at the key seasonal turning points of the year – samhain, midsummer, imbolc, and midwinter.

Hawthorn follows protagonist Robert Sutherland across the bogs of Caithness to Leask House, where things are not as they first appear. Working for the Ordnance Survey drawing up the first OS map of Scotland, Robert soon learns that he is not alone in this empty corner of the country, and that family secrets lurk in every bog and shadow. Described by Neil Mackay in The Herald as ‘the best Scottish ghost story of the 21st century’, Hawthorn is a tale to freeze your blood on a cold winter’s night.

Elaine will talk about the importance of folklore, landscape and location for writing about the supernatural, and discuss how she switched from crime fiction, (writing as best selling author E.S.Thomson) to writing ghost stories.
