Ken Currie: Paintings and Writings

In conversation with Dr Tom Normand

This event has passed

A review of Scottish and contemporary art through the medium of Ken Currie’s work, and his writings, from 1980-2020.

Join renowned Scottish painter Ken Currie in conversation with art historian Dr Tom Normand as they explore four decades of Currie’s extraordinary career. Currie, a leading figure among the ‘New Glasgow Boys’ of the 1980s, is celebrated for his unsettling yet luminous portrayals of the human figure, exploring themes of mortality, violence, and humanity through rites, rituals, and the grotesque. From his early history paintings, such as the Calton Weavers series, to major commissions including portraits of Nobel laureate Peter Higgs and Professor Dame Sue Black, Currie’s work confronts the moral and physical dimensions of contemporary life while maintaining an intense visual beauty.

Tom Normand is the author of several books including Ken Currie: Details of a Journey, London, 2002; and Scottish Photography: a history.  Tom is an Honorary member of the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Art History, University of St Andrews.
