Portraits of an LGBTI Generation
Created as part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s The Coming Back Out Ball, this striking exhibition celebrates the lives and stories of queer elders across Scotland.
Conceived by Lewis Hetherington, the project worked with LGBTI+ Elders Social Dance Club members to capture intimate portraits and personal stories in places meaningful to them. Photographer Tiu Makkonen, alongside filmmakers Graeme Roger and Ania Urbanowska, brought these stories to life in a moving multimedia experience.
From motorbikes to accordions, pirates to poetry, the portraits reveal the passions, quirks, and individuality of a generation often pushed to the margins. Previously shown online and in venues including the Gallery of Modern Art Glasgow, Eden Court, and St John’s Hospital in Livingston, the exhibition is a vibrant celebration of resilience, memory, and community.
A National Theatre of Scotland and All The Queens Men co-production, in partnership with Eden Court and Luminate, and in association with Glasgow City Council.
